This post is meant for all members of the extended Harrell family who have a connection to the Turkey Creek Community, as well as others who have an interest in archiving and preserving the history of this quiet, storybook community that is in danger of being forgotten.

Between now and September 10th, 2010, our goal is to collect all known photos, stories and history of all those who ever lived in Turkey Creek (Between the Rivers). The ultimate result will be a dedicated website devoted to the history of the Turkey Creek Community.

While the Harrell Family holds a special place in our hearts – as all nine children of Alvin and Myra Harrell were born and raised in Turkey Creek – we know there are many others who also hold this area in their hearts.

We call on all Harrell family members, as well as those who may run upon this posting, to help in this concerted effort. No piece of the Turkey Creek story is too small. Don’t leave this page without taking 60 seconds to at least share your name and contact information – and, if possible, your connection to Turkey Creek.

To get things started, let me share a link (click here) that will take you to a Turkey Creek Community Photo Collection:

This assortment of photos were assembled by Tripp Scott and made available to everyone through Flickr. I don’t know Tripp, yet, but it’s clear he enjoys using photography to keep the history alive for the Land Between the Rivers communities.

Thanks Tripp for making a difference and serving as a starting place for all of us to build from – as we work to tell the story of the Turkey Creek Community.

In order to give everyone access to the high-resolution photographs, we use Flickr.com – the largest image hosting provider in the world. With our upgraded account type we can now upload an unlimited number of images and videos. So don’t hesitate to send us your Harrell family photos – as we have unlimited bandwidth and storage.

The account is set-up for you to be able to download any image – in a number of resolutions and sizes. So, if you find a photo you would like to store on your own hard drive – feel free to download it, print it and/or burn it to a DVD.

And if the digital world is a little confusing to you – there is a good chance that it’s a piece of cake for someone in your circle of friends and family. If not, feel free to contact me and I’ll try my best to help.

A few other things…
• We would love to be able to share all of the family photos with everyone in the family. If you notice that you have one that isn’t on this web site – please share it with us so everyone can enjoy it. Additionally, by scanning your images with a high-resolution, flat bed scanner – you can be assured that you’ll always have a back-up copy. If you need help in that area – we can help you, free of any cost.
• If you see a photo that is improperly captioned or misfiled – just let me know, it’s easy to change.
• If you have a Harrell family keepsake or document, it would be wonderful if you could take a digital photograph of it – on a white background – and send it to us.
• We’re determined to have an individual photo of every person in the Alvin & Myra Harrell Family (including spouses) – to be included on each person’s HarrellFamily.org profile page. At the top right of this page you will find a tab named “Family Directory”. Here you will find all of the family addresses, phone numbers and email addresses, so far. For privacy reasons, this section is password protected. I provided the current password to everyone at the family reunion. However, if you were unable to attend – or you forgot it – just let me know and I’ll email it to you.

Please keep in mind that this directory is for contact purposes only. Go to the “9 Children” tab to get a comprehensive list of everyone. Within the directory, you’ll notice that children are only listed with parents if they still live at the same address. Once someone has a different address than a parent – they have an independent listing within the directory. REMEMBER: Sharing corrections or additions with me is as simple as going to the bottom of this page and filling out the reply form. Also, we would like an email address for everyone who has one.

During the 2010 reunion, Friday evening and all day Saturday, my husband, Mark, and our eldest son, John Mark, have agreed to scan old family photos, slides, negatives, newspaper articles and other family documents into a high quality, flatbed scanner that is attached to a computer. There will be no charge for this service.

This will enable all of us to preserve and share our Harrell Family Heritage for years to come. Once your item is scanned, photo restoration software will be used, after the reunion, to potentially improve imperfections in the images, including cracks, blemishes and fading.

So this isn’t just about sharing your precious images with others – it’s also about bringing your own images back to life and giving you peace of mind.

It’s important to understand that this process does not affect your original image in any way and will only take a minute or two per photo. We’ll have a form for you to fill out telling who is in the photo and describing any important details about it.

For those unfamiliar with the process, imagine making a copy of a document on a copy machine – except the result is not a hard copy. Instead, the copy is a digital file that can be saved to a DVD or CD that should last for over 100 years. After the reunion, we’ll send you a copy of the disc containing the photos for you to keep, duplicate, or print. If the originals are ever lost, stolen, or damaged, you will have this digital copy as a backup.

So, bring all your old family photos and precious documents to the reunion to be scanned, and sleep well, knowing that they can be reproduced, if something unexpected happens.

NOTE: It’s hard to gauge how many items will need to be scanned and how long it will take to scan each item – but Mark and our son, John Mark are determined to archive all that is possible within a 36 hour period.

During the reunion, if you look for us between 8pm and 9pm, you’ll know where to find all five of us. We’ll be having our fourth meal of the day – or at least a late-night dessert at Belew’s Dairy Bar.

Belew's, as it looked in the 50's

During last year’s reunion, some of the youngest members of the family became acquainted with this Harrell Family Favorite. Belew’s, is a drive-in restaurant, on U.S. Highway 62 East, in Aurora – complete with carhops. Since 1951, diners have been able to eat in their car, at a picnic table or take their meal to go.

Their huge burgers are wonderful – the homemade kind, where the ground beef is shaped into a ball and put on the grill and then smashed, which makes it thin, with a little bit of a crispy edge. And if you still have room, go for a milkshake, malt, or a cone of ice cream.

Belew’s is only open from late April until Labor Day – important to note when planning future family reunions!
